Chinese New Year 2024

Chinese New Year 2024It would seem that all the New Year holidays have already passed, but Chinese New Year is ahead of us. It is celebrated much longer and on a larger scale than in Western countries.

There is no fixed date for the holiday. Every year it is set at a different time depending on the lunar calendar. Chinese New Year falls on the second new moon after the winter solstice on the 21st of December. This tradition is over 4,000 years old. Chinese New Year is the biggest and favorite holiday in all of East Asia.

Chinese New Year will occur on 10 February 2024. Celebration will last for a fortnight, until the 24th of February. According to Chinese chronology, it will be the year 4721. The year will end on 28 January 2025.

Interestingly, in the Celestial Empire, New Year marks the beginning of spring and is considered the Spring Festival.

According to the Eastern calendar, each year is symbolized by a certain combination of symbols which is repeated every 60 years. Combination consists of one of the twelve zodiacal signs of a particular color and one of the five elements (water, earth, metal, fire and wood).

The year 2024 is symbolized by Dragon with the element Wood and Green color. Dragon is believed to bring good luck and prosperity.

Symbolism of Chinese New Year is also very much liked by people in Western countries. People in the western hemisphere also follow this eastern tradition for many years: buy souvenirs with the main animal of the year, dress in certain colors for celebration and make symbolic New Year decorations.

Most Chinese people rest from the first to the seventh day of New Year. However, the official weekend lasts for a fortnight. Most businesses, institutions and shops do not work during this time, so you need to prepare in advance and stock up on food and essentials for such a long celebration. And the whole country starts to move because it is customary to celebrate New Year’s Eve with beloved and family. All work matters are postponed.

In addition to the main symbolism of the year it is customary to dress up houses with red decor and launch fireworks. Red is the main color of the holiday. All days of celebration are accompanied by street festivities, dancing, fireworks and costume shows.

There are a lot of traditions and customs in the Celestial Empire. For example, it is customary to do a general cleaning in New Year, as well as to get rid of old and unnecessary things. And vice versa: you need to get a haircut, buy new things and pay off all your debts. The Chinese believe that if you enter New Year renewed, it will bring good luck.

Celebration of Chinese New Year will end on the 24th of February. Traditionally, the Lantern Festival is held on the last day of the holiday. Residents of the Celestial Empire gather in the streets to light and launch paper lanterns into the sky on this day. They symbolize hope, success and happiness.
